Ubuntu desktop

It felt like I paid nothing to get a “Mac” laptop after installing Ubuntu 7.10. The 3D graphics acceleration is really cool. With my old XP, it wasn’t very fantastic and I can never get such performance with Vista on my old Dell Inspiron laptop. That feeling of not being cheated… priceless.

I learnt about this from colleagues.

For the internet addicts like myself who may be traveling and using internet cafes, this is a cool suite, provided the system allows USB sticks to be inserted.

Why it is cool? For example, the portable Firefox browser is capable of keeping your profiles, bookmarks etc. Thunderbird email client is part of the suite too, means you can check a few accounts while traveling.

Another scenario: your company likes to do audit of employee’s PC for “illegal” softwares. With portableapps, you can use your favorite application without installation and leaving traces behind… nice~

The software in this portableapps suite are all legal freeware, so no worries!

I was using Freemind tool to create mindmap. However, that map is static and I have to get home to edit it with Freemind to make any changes. I wish I could change it on the spot when I have Internet access.

Recently I discovered www.mindmeister.com . It offers free basic account that allows online mindmapping and even collaborative mapping. You can import Freemind files too!

        The import was painless
