I was showering when I suddenly wondered if it is possible to “paste” a post-it note on any webpage. So while wasting Singapore’s precious fresh water, I was pondering over the implementational details of such an idea.

The idea that any user can easily add post-it notes on any webpage, not necessarily their own, would require some kind of DHTML overlay. Perhaps this hypothetical web-tool accepts a URL of your choice and presents a tool……blah blah blah..

After a few litres of water later, I stepped out and googled (in clothing of course). Guess what, someone did it…. here. (pls wait for a while before the notes start to appear)

The first system that has this annotation feature came out in 1993 call Third Voice. Since then owners of websites has seen it as a form of web graffiti. Third Voice did not make money as user size didn’t grow as expected… Goes to show interesting idea without a proper business model will be doomed to fail.
