Found this at Digg.com. A short list of free and reasonable lightweight software.

I always believe there is no such thing as perpetual lightweight. Software will eventually become big and bulky over time. I was using Avast free antivirus home edition for quite sometime until one fine day after an upgrade, it screwed up my PC. It kept my CPU spinning high for no apparent reason. It was so bad that i had to uninstall and looked for another anti-virus ware.

Still, I prefer freeware over paidware. Reason being: most of the time, I haven’t paid a single cent for the proggies that worked really fine (usually prior to some upgrade of something, it could be the software itself or WinXP). Whereas at office, we experienced paying money for systems to add to our misery. Of course, it would be best to stick to the old wisdom: “don’t fix it if it ain’t broken!”, but that just contradicts my inherent nature “to get a better system/software” :P

Anyway, my personal favourites:
CDburnerXP pro
VLC video player
µTorrent
Firefox browser
ebuddy.com web-based multi-instant messenger
7-zip handles many formats
