I prefer Firefox (FF) browser over IE, though I must say IE7 did a nice catch up to look and feel like Firefox. I use to manually poll blogs for updates. Though I know what the heck is RSS (Really Simple Syndicate) but I just didn’t bother to install a RSS reader because simply there are too many programs on my machine. That was until I decided to search for an add-on for my favorite browser.
I found Wizz RSS news reader. Just here to install if you are on a FF browser. Once installed, you need to restart FF browser. You should see something like this:
Click on the open/close side bar button just beside the “Wizz RSS 2.1.6″ should reveal a side bar:
As you can see I have a couple of folders (eg blog) with RSS feeds. Those in bold red are feeds that have updates. These folders are actually regular bookmark folders of the FF browser.
Before adding RSS feeds, I set my browser to NOT use FF’s Live Bookmarks. They somehow screw up in Wizz RSS. Go Tools->Options:
Select the “Show me a preview…” radio. Now you are ready to add RSS feeds easily! Just go to any blog or website. FF browser will automatically show a RSS icon at the end of the URL address textbox:
Simply click on that icon and it will bring you to a preview of the RSS feed. After which, you simply add bookmark:
After adding the feed, you may want to add it into watch list:
The watch list update frequency can be configured under Watch List-> Configure Watch List. I suggest you set to > 30 mins if you have a number of feeds under watch list.
Now you can get alerts from your favorite sites and blogs that support RSS all in the browser!
